General Information

The need for the judiciary to reflect broadly the racial and gender composition of South Africa, as required by section 174(2) of the Constitution of South Africa, 1996 (Act 108 of 1996) will be taken into consideration in the filling of vacant posts. It is the intention of the Magistrate Commission to fill posts permanently and applicants should not apply for appointment at any centre if it is not their intention to relocate permanently.

Applications must be submitted on the forms prescribed by regulation 4 of the Regulations for Judicial Officers in the Lower Courts, 1994 (Regulation Gazette No. 5264 of 11 March 1994) obtainable from all magistrates offices and should be accompanied by:

  • A certified copy of Identity Document
  • Certified copies of al academic and profesional qualifications
  • An affidavit of assets and liabilities
  • A complete curriculum vitae
Applicants should also provide a fax number where they can be contacted.

Applications will only be considered if all the above-mentioned application documents have been submitted and have been propely completed. Applications that are received after the closing date wil not e considered. The onus is on the applicant to ensure that the application is received by the Secretary of the Magistrates Commission on or before the closing date. Please note that correspondence will only be entered into with successfull candidates.

Serving Regional Magistrates, Chief Magistrates and Senior Magistrates who are interested in a transfer to any of the advertised centres should fully motivate their applications, which should accompany their application documents.
